The Archives of the Arch Bishopric of Bamberg constitute the central archives of all church authorities, institutions and organisations within the archbishopric of Bamberg. This means that it also oversees all the services and institutions in the episcopal seat of Bamberg. The archives are in charge of looking after the archives of the parishes and all the other church institutions within the archbishopric. Today the archives are split into two main sections: The older section includes the archives relating to the high authorities of Bamberg's prince-bishopric that are still owned by the church, covering the period up to the dissolution of the prince-bishopric in the wake of secularisation. The more recent section contains the registries of all the church authorities in the bishopric which was created in 1817/21. |
