Basketball fans nickname Bamberg "Freak City". This is due to the enthusiasm with which the town supports its team, the Brose Baskets.

It is hardly surprising that Bamberg ranks second - only to Berlin - in the crowds it pulled to the Bundesliga matches in 2007/08, amounting to over 6000 per match. Four times German champion and three times cup winner, a frequent runner-up, the Brose Baskets have notched up several admirable successes, regularly causing the temperature to rise at national and Eruopean cup matches staged at the STECHERT Arena.
