Modern shadow theatre differs significantly from the traditional Asian shadow play. Apart from shadows, it also uses reflection and refraction, and, above all, it is played in front of the screen. By moving the light around, seemingly three-dimensional images of great expressive power are created.
The „Theatre of Shadows“ was founded in Bamberg in 1984. From May to October, it features the show „Light and Shadow“ which portrays the history of the city and is presented in the small chapel on the cathedral hill every weekend. A definite „must-have-seen“ for all visitors of Bamberg (www.bamberg.theater-der-schatten.de).
The repertory for children encompasses successful “homespun tales” as well as popular classics like „Treasure Island“ or „Peter and the Wolf“. During the winter season, the Theatre of Shadows tours with these productions all over Europe.
The Theatre of Shadows is dedicated to the dramaturgic development of shadow theatre, working in close co-operation with the International Centre of Shadow Theatre in Schwäbisch Gmünd. It has extended the dramaturgic means to include reflection and refraction and offers courses and seminars on these new modes of expression all over the world
