"The market gardeners' district - grown through the centuries..."
A guided bicycle tour with Christian Erik Berkenkamp
Centuries ago Bamberg's market gardeners were already exporting their produce - mostly onions, vegetables, herb and spice seeds - far beyond Bamberg's borders. Their liquorice was their best-known product: In Goethe's day it was sold by the centner to Bohemia, Hungary, Austria and Prague. In the early modern age, Bamberg's liquorice was even sold at Venetian markets. Around 1900, its cucumbers, onions and garlic were sold as far afield as Holland.
The tour takes us to the houses belonging not only to the farmsteads but also to those located in other parts of the town, as well as to the fields on the edge of the Old Town. Light is shed on many aspects of this centuries-old culture which can still be seen today in areas you would least expect it. Existing market gardening businesses are visited.
The tour also includes a visit to the Mussärol organic herb gardens, giving you an additional insight into the workings of a modern-day market gardening business.
