Churches und Religious Communities
After Henry II. had been elected King of Germany in 1002, he decided to found a diocese in Bamberg. The imperial endowment that he gave to the diocese and the cathedral suggests that he wanted Bamberg to be raised to the symbolic capital of the Roman Empire of the German nation. Just like Rome, Bamberg is set on seven hills.
The townscape is dominated by many churches and monasteries. Today, the archbishop and the administration of the diocese are still in Bamberg.
There are several religious communities in Bamberg. For some of them we can offer links to their webpages. Unfortunately, English versions are not available.
