Stages

Calderon-FreilichtspieleSpeaking of  theatre in Bamberg is primarily speaking of the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theatre. But other theatres are following closely, namely Germany's smallest playhouse, the Brentano theatre, the puppetry Loose that is unique within Europe, the « shadow theatre », which is one of the best of its kind, and the puppetry Herrnleben, which brings the Bamberg « Kasperle », a traditional German Puchinello figure, to life.

Eponym E.T.A. Hoffmann would be proud of Bamberg's biggest stage. Many awards and prizes, a very varied and sometimes even bold repertoire and the Calderòn- open air performances in the Old Court Yard add to the reputation of the theatre.

In 1802, imperial Earl Julius von Soden, a Prussian ambassador, a privy councillor, a landowner, a theatre-lover and a poet, had the building-complex on Schillerplatz converted into the theatre. Thus, Bamberg was one of the first towns which employed a permanent ensemble. In 1808, E.T.A. Hoffmann was music director at Bamberg's theatre. He stayed in the town until 1813.
Since 1970, it bears the name E.T.A . Hoffmann Theatre and the town Bamberg is in charge of it. On October 3rd 2003, the completion and the reopening of the ETA Hoffmann theatre was celebrated. After three years of renovation and expansion work following the fire on July 27th 2000, the ensemble can now perform again in the theatre.

In Bamberg, not only adults can have a very good time at the theatre. The Chapeau Claque - children theatre is a professional stage for old and young theatre-lovers. The small ensemble usually produces three plays per season: a Christmas play, a Summer play, and a guest performance play which takes place in the own house or goes on a tour.

We are sorry that the internet presentations of the stages are available in German only so far, but the information there might be helpful for you anyway, considering dates and addresses.
